Kernels avoid sweep in Peoria with 5-2 win

PEORIA, Ill. (KWWL) -

The Cedar Rapids Kernels avoided a sweep in Peoria with a 5-2 win over the Chiefs on Wednesday night.

Ryan Crowley threw five and two-thirds scoreless innings while allowing only three hits, striking out two and walking none on the way to his first win of the season.

The Kernels took a 1-0 lead in the first when Kevin Moesquit, who singled and then stole second base, scored on an RBI single by Kaleb Cowart.

The score would stay 1-0 until the fifth inning when the Kernels bats exploded for three more runs. Ryan Jones picked up two RBI's on double that went off the right field wall.  Jones would later score on a fielding error by Chiefs second baseman Wes Darvill.

The Kernels then made it 5-0 when Trevor Hairgrove, who had doubled earlier in the inning, scored on an RBI single by Carlos Lugo.

The Chiefs would finally get on the board in the seventh, scoring two runs off Kernels reliever Eswarlin Jimenez.  Jimenez pitched one and two-thirds innings, allowing two runs on four hits.

Stephen Tromblee picked up his first save of the season, pitching one and two-thirds innings.  He allowed no runs on no hits, struck out three and walked none.

Jose Rosario took the loss for the Chiefs.  He allowed four runs on seven hits in four and two-thirds innings of work. He struck out six and walked two.

The Kernels head to Bowling Green, Kentucky to continue their nine game road trip.  Game one of the series is set for Thursday night.

    The Missouri Valley Conference exercised an option to keep the men's basketball tournament in Saint Louis through at least 2020. The previous agreement ended in 2018 with a two year to remain at the Scottrade Center. The tournament, known as Arch Madness, will conduct it's 30th straight tournament in Saint Louis in 2020.
