Statue unveiled in honor of Hawkeye Legend Gable

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

Forty years ago he won a gold medal in Munich, but legendary wrestler and coaching great Dan Gable is being celebrated for a lot more in Iowa City.

The Waterloo native was honored today with a statue outside of the main Entrance to Carver Hawkeye Arena.

The seven foot tall, bronze statue was unveiled Wednesday afternoon in honor of one of the greatest coaches in NCAA history. Dan Gable's Hawkeyes won 15 national team titles during his 21 years as head coach.

The statue was sculpted by Larry Nowlan who sculpted the statue of Nile Kinnick. The statue of Gable is being unveiled just three days before the start of the Olympic Wrestling Trials.
