If at first you don't succeed, try again. That's exactly what the Iowa Corn Promotions Board, Iowa State and the University of Iowa are doing with the trophy that honors the winner of the annual Iowa vs. Iowa State football game.
When Iowa Corn took over as the title sponsor for the Cy-Hawk series in 2011, they came up with a trophy that was greeted with outcry from the public. After receiving overwhelming complaints about how bad people thought the trophy was, a temporary trophy was put in place for the 2011 game and it was back to the drawing board.
On Saturday, three new designs were unveiled that people can vote for online. Voting will continue through midnight on April 30.
Last fall, fans submitted nearly 500 ideas for the new trophy, with the top ideas presented to a panel of former players and coaches from the two schools and two representatives from Iowa Corn. Panel members included Hayden Fry, Tim Dwight, Gary Dolphin, Ed Podolak, John Quinn, Eric Heft, Ben Bruns, John Walters, Dick Gallagher and Kevin Ross.
The winning trophy will be announced the first week of May and the finished trophy will be on the sidelines at Kinnick Stadium on September 8, ready to be awarded to the winner.
