IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

The University of Iowa unveiled a bronze statue dedicated to the great wrestling coach and Olympic athlete Dan Gable on Wednesday afternoon.

The statue will reflect an iconic image of Gable coaching the Hawkeye's. Gable was the all-time winningest coach at the University of Iowa, compiling a record of 355-21-5 in dual meets from 1976-1997. He also coached 152 All-Americans, 106 Big Ten Champions, 45 national champions, and 10 Olympians.

As a wrestler, Gable was an undefeated state champion his sophomore through senior years of high school.  In college, Gable compiled a record of 181-1 at Iowa State.  His only defeat came in his final match against Larry Owens of the University of Washington.

After college, Gable wrestled on the national freestyle wrestling circuit and then internationally.  His freestyle record was 97-5 overall.

The unveiling took place just three day before Iowa City hosts the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team Trials.
