Education reform bill still on the table for lawmakers

DES MOINES (KWWL) -

Tuesday was the last day Iowa lawmakers were paid for their time in Des Moines, but they're still trying to pass an education reform bill.

The Iowa House passed a new version of the bill Monday afternoon.

This version includes rules for online learning, third grade retention beginning in 2016, and more evaluation of students among other things.

Two requirements were dropped from this version-- that includes the requirement that made performance the main factor in making layoff decisions for teachers and expanded the number of hours for preschool weekly to 15 from 10.

The bill now moves to the Senate, where Capitol insiders say it probably won't pass.

If that's the case, it goes to a conference committee for more tweaking.
