Cedar Rapids Kernels fall to Peoria


A rough four innings for the Kernels Austin Wood was all the Chiefs needed to take a 6-2 win over Cedar Rapids in Peoria.

Wood allowed three runs on five hits with one strikeout and two walks in four innings on the mound.

Paul Hoilman got the Chiefs on the board in the first inning with a two-out double that scored Rafael Lopez from third.

Ryan Cuneo belted a two-run homer in the third inning to give the Chiefs a 3-0 lead.

Andy Workman, who had three hits and a walk, belted a solo home run in the fourth inning to cut the Chiefs lead to two.

With Frank DeJiulio on the mound for the Kernels, Cuneo hit his second two-run home run of the night in the fifth inning to give Peoria a 5-1 lead. 

Oliver Zapata then crushed a solo home run in the sixth inning to finish off the scoring for the Chiefs.

The Kernels scored the final run of the game in the seventh when Wendell Soto reached on fielder's choice that scored Abel Baker.

DeJiulio gave up three runs on five hits with two strikeouts in 1.2 innings for the Kernels.  Stephen Tromblee pitched the final 2.1 innings for the Kernels, allowing no runs on one hit.

Michael Jensen got the win for Peoria, allowing one run on three hits while striking out five and walking two in six innings of work.

The Chiefs Austin Reed allowed one run on two hits in two innings of relief work. Jeff Lorick pitched the ninth, allowing no runs on no hits.

The kernels and Chiefs take the field again in Peoria on Tuesday night.  First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

The Kernels return home on April 26 when they host South Bend at 6:35 p.m.
