400 Athletes compete in East Central Spring games

More than 400 athletes from seven counties competed in Saturday's East Central Area Spring Games at Coe College in Cedar Rapids.

Saturday's events featured track and field.

The event is a qualifier for the state competition in Ames.

Organizers say the event is a great outlet for these athletes.

"It gives these athletes that opportunity to show people that they're no different than anybody else, that we're all equal it's just that they may have a different way of showing what they're able to do," said Sally Briggs, East Central Area director for Special Olympics Iowa.

The spring games are one of 22 sporting events put on by Special Olympics Iowa this year.
