ISU roof goes "green", yellow and red

Iowa State University is expanding the campus green to the roof of one campus building, and it's all thanks to one student from Cedar Rapids.

"I happened to work here at the Memorial Union as a sound tech and came across this space so I decided this is the next green roof we should do on campus.' ISU Senior Miles Thompson told WHO TV.

Thompson thought the memorial union was a great location for a roof garden, but found out if he wanted to see it happen, he would have to help raise the money…so he did.

Thompson helped raise more than $34,000 to install the new roof.

The roof will do more than support a garden; it will also soak up rain and reduce runoff.

Students are also using the space to show off their school spirit.

"Seedum is the plant on top of the trays. There's different varieties so we're going to get different colors so the design will be in the shape of a cyclone," Thompson said.

The green roof also helps reduce the roof temperature...which will help extend the life of the roof and reduce energy costs.
