Road congestion on Hwy 218 near Janesville

The Department of Transportation (DOT) wants drivers to slow down or just avoid a specific stretch of road while they continue road construction.

The work has already led to backed up traffic, and at least one minor crash has already happened in the area.

Because of the road work near Janesville, the DOT put traffic signals at the Highway 218 intersections with Bremer County Road C-50 and Marquis Road.

It's led to backed-up traffic in the northbound lanes of 218.

Drivers have already begin to experience delays related to the construction of that new interchange.  Drivers headed from Cedar Falls to Waverly are forced to merge into one lane just past Gresham Road.

That, along with a couple of stop lights, has meant a pretty significant amount of congestion.

The DOT wants drivers to pay attention to changes on 218.

Stop lights, lane closures and other actions will continue in both directions intermittently until the work is finished.

Dave Roeber, a DOT District Construction Engineer said, "We're always concerned in any work zone about the potential for traffic crashes and we certainly are here as well partly because of the heavy traffic volumes that travel through here."

Remember, traffic fines double in work zones.

The DOT says it's paying for extra patrols from the Iowa State Patrol during construction.  Of course, that's in addition to Janesville police and the Bremer County Sheriff's Office which also patrol the area.

The construction work is expected to continue through mid-November.
