Marshalltown sues over fire debris left behind by business

MARSHALLTOWN (KWWL) -

The City of Marshalltown is filing a lawsuit against the owners of a building that burned down in February.

The Hispanic grocery store on Main Street in Marshalltown burned to the ground two months ago, and since then nothing has changed.

The 60-day permit to clean up has expired, and the city says no efforts to clean up have started.

Nearby businesses are saying it's hurting their bottom line.

The lawsuit filed is an effort to force the owners to start cleaning up or fork over the cash needed to get rid of the debris, which is estimated to cost half-a-million dollars.
