UPDATE: Cedar Rapids organ saved from scrap heap

A 1904 pipe organ that was slated to move from a Cedar Rapids church to the junk pile has found a new home.

Christ Episcopal Church says that Curt Schmitt has bought the Verney pipe organ for one dollar and will move it to the VIVA Performing Arts School in Dixon, Illinois.

It's new home will be Philander hall where it will be used for instruction and public performances.  The hall will be remodeled to hold the massive instrument.

The VIVA Performing Arts School serves over 600 students yearly in music, visual arts or drama classes.

R. Karstens Organ Works of Columbus, Ohio will dismantle and remove the organ between May 14 and June 1.  The work will not interfere with regularly scheduled weekend services.

Once the organ is removed, the altar area will be remodeled.  The freed up space will also help with handicapped accessibility.
