Nitrogen plant in Tri-States breaks ground on $100M expansion

Wednesday morning, an area plant that manufactures fertilizer products broke ground on a $100 million expansion project.

The Rentech Nitrogen plant is near East Dubuque, Ill. in Jo Daviess County. It employs nearly 150 people throughout the Tri-State area.

Through the expansion, the plant plans to increase its ammonia production capacity by nearly a quarter, from 300,000 tons per year to 370,000 tons. The project will also grow Rentech's on-site ammonia storage capacity 150 percent, from 40,000 tons to 60,000 tons.

Rentech Nitrogen said more than 90 percent of its sales are to local and regional growers in Iowa, Illinois and Wisconsin.

"This is a fantastic project," Rentech president and CEO Hunt Ramsbottom said. "We love this facility, we love the employees here and this part of the country, and we want to keep investing here if we possibly can."

Ramsbottom said the worldwide demand for grains means growing demand for these fertilizer products.

The capacity expansion project is expected to create 80 construction jobs plus more jobs after the building process.
