Two hospitalized after small fire at Marion care center

Two staff members were hospitalized after a small fire at a care center in Marion Tuesday night.

Firefighters were called to the Willow Gardens Care Center at 455 31st Street at around 10:10 p.m. Tuesday for a fire in a room.

When crews arrived, they found staff escorting residents of the north wing into the lobby and the north wing filled with fire extinguisher powder.

Firefighters determined that a fire had started on a shelf in a supply closet and staff had put it out using two fire extinguishers.  The fire department says the fire did not get hot enough to activate the sprinkler system.

Two employees were taken to Mercy Medical Center after complaining of shortness of breath after breathing in fire extinguisher powder.

Residents returned to their rooms after about 20 minutes once the powder was ventilated from the building.

Damage is estimated at less than $100.  The cause of the fire is under investigation.
