BH Co. sheriff pushes for safety upgrades at 218 & Cedar Wapsi Rd.

It has been referred to as one of the most notorious intersections in the state of Iowa.

Tuesday in Burlington, Black Hawk County Sheriff Tony Thompson used crash scene photos to try to convince officials at a DOT Commission meeting to fund safety upgrades at Highway 218 & Cedar Wapsi Road.

"When we don't get funded, this is what we deal with," said Sheriff Thompson.

Approximately 18,000 vehicles pass through this intersection each day.  It's estimated that number will nearly double by 2025.

Thompson says he was the first person to present to the commission from a law enforcement perspective.

The goal is to get funding for safety upgrades, which will be part of the DOT's five-year program from FY13-FY17.

The DOT's next commission meeting will happen in Ames on May 8th.

A draft plan for the five-year program will be revealed at that meeting.
