Santorum suspends presidential campaign

Posted:

Rick Santorum suspended his presidential campaign on Tuesday.

Santorum spoke about recent health problems with his youngest daughter Bella who was hospitalized last week.

Santorum made the announcement in his home state of Pennsylvania just two weeks before the GOP primary there. Santorum's announcement makes Mitt Romney the likely Republican nominee.

Earlier in the day, Gov. Terry Branstad endorsed Romney. At a statehouse news conference, Branstad said that it's time for all Republicans to unite behind the former Massachusetts governor and begin focusing on the fall campaign against President Barack Obama.

Branstad had remained neutral throughout the campaign for Iowa's leadoff caucuses and through the primary season so far. The governor says he hasn't spoken to Romney directly about the endorsement but is eager to begin campaigning for him.
