Cedar Rapids company to mark construction of new facility

Intermec Technologies Corporation broke ground Tuesday on their new $12.5 million, two-story, 81,000 square-foot facility in downtown Cedar Rapids.

The building, at 601 Third St. SE, will replace the company's existing facility at 550 Second St. SE.  Expected to be complete in June 2013, Intermec said the total investment of the project is $28 million.

The Cedar Rapids Metro Economic Alliance worked with Intermec to help secure state and local funding for the construction project. The Cedar Rapids City Council last month approved a development agreement that will provide the company some property tax relief over 10 years.

Intermec's products include radio frequency identification (RFID), mobile computing and data collection systems, bar code printers and label media. They are headquartered in Everett, WA.  They employ 2,300 people in 65 countries.

Intermec focuses on hand-held mobile computers in Cedar Rapids, where they employ about 250 people.
