UPDATE: Waterloo approves moratorium on liquor licenses

The city of Waterloo is once again looking to crack down on liquor licenses.

Monday night, the city council approved an ordinance to put a 90-day moratorium on issuing any new liquor license to businesses along Broadway Street.

One year ago, the city passed a similar moratorium for another part of the city's east side to allow time to tighten zoning regulations, making it harder for new liquor stores to open.  But Mayor Buck Clark says those rules apparently weren't tight enough and interest in east side liquor stores has continued to climb.

"We're going to work this time on putting an overlay over a couple different areas in our town that will prevent any new liquor license of any kind in specific areas of town," Clark said. "I believe we can get done what we need to get done within 90 days. I don't think we need any longer than that."

Mayor Clark says the effort is not to stop new businesses from developing.  Instead, its goal is to limit the high concentration of liquor stores in neighborhoods where violence has popped up around such businesses.
