Proposed adoption tax credit could help families

Families looking to adopt may soon have relief thanks to a bill that would extend tax credits used for adoption expenses.

Congressman Bruce Braley announced the 'Making Adoption Affordable Act' Monday in Waterloo.

It's a bill to permanently extend a federal tax credit for qualified adoption expenses.

Jonathan and Kayla Craig of Des Moines adopted Joseph from Nigeria.

Kayla's father contacted Braley's office when Joseph's adoption almost fell through due to bureaucratic red tape and errors.

"Right from the very beginning when you do a home study to even start the process it's thousands of dollars that pile up right away. And then at the end when we were in Nigeria waiting for his visa to bring him home it got really expensive,"

It took the Craig's about a year to a year and a half to get Joseph home.
