Tarrence Newman Tarrence Newman

An Iowa City man was tasered early Sunday morning after threatening to beat officers.

Iowa City officers say they were out with several people arguing in front of 320 E. Burlington Street at around 3:16 a.m. Sunday.  While they were speaking with one person, officers say Tarrence Newman, 35, continued to yell and was threatening to beat officers.

When police tried to arrest Newman, they say he became defiant and began kneeing an officer in the leg.

Officers say they had to taser Newman to subdue him.

Police say after they had him under control, Newman threatened to shoot officers.

Newman is charged with assaulting a peace officer, interference with official acts causing injury and first degree harassment.
