CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) -
A group that represents faculty at the University of Northern Iowa (UNI) is claiming victory over the administration.
Northern Iowa United Faculty says the firing of an assistant professor last summer is one of the reasons the American Association of United Professors (AAUP) will review UNI.
Now an independent arbitrator says UNI administrators violated due process when they terminated that assistant professor.
United Faculty says the violation of due process was brought to the attention of school president Ben Allen before any cuts or layoffs were announced and before the group planned its review.
The arbitrator recommends a payment of two-thirds of the salary the professor would have been paid in the 2011-2012 academic year as the basis for such a settlement.
The arbitrator's decision is not binding.
The next part of the process will be for President Allen to review this decision.
