Pony Express Riders head to Camp Sunnyside

DECORAH (KWWL) -

An old time tradition continues in Eastern Iowa. The Pony Express will make the trek from Decorah to Hudson Friday ending up in Des Moines Saturday.

This year is the first year Heather Bettmeng and her horse, Misty will be riding.

"She was nervous this morning, but she has cooled down a lot now," said Bettmeng.

The ride is set up like a real life pony express. Each rider will ride about a mile, pass off the donations to the next rider.

All these donations are headed to Camp Sunnyside in Des Moines. It's a camp for people with disabilities.

Heidi Kriener was born with Spina Bifida and spent eight years at Camp Sunnyside.

"It helped me out a lot. It helped you to know that it's ok. You can make friends. It's just a place to get away and know your not alone," said Kriener.

The camp isn't state funded so every donation is important.
