UPDATE: Anhydrous spill forces St. Lucas evacuations

A crash involving two nursery tanks filled with anhydrous ammonia forced an evacuation in the city of St. Lucas.

It happened at 11:15 a.m. Friday. Officials say Keith C Steinlage, 40, of West Union was pulling two tanks of anhydrous ammonia when a pin came loose. The tanks broke free, rolled into a parking lot, and rolled over. One of the tanks began leaking.

Emergency crews evacuated about 41 people from downtown St. Lucas as well as a two block area just north of the downtown area. The people were taken to a church until the leak could be contained.

No one was hurt in the crash and there were no injuries or illness reported in the evacuation. Police are still investigating the crash.
