Central Iowa county warns about whooping cough outbreak

DES MOINES (KWWL) -

Health officials in Polk County are warning parents about an outbreak of whooping cough that has taken place at three schools.

The county Health Department says at least 11 cases of pertussis have been confirmed. Pertussis is more commonly called whooping cough.

The disease spreads through the air when an infected person coughs. The cough can worsen over several weeks before developing into uncontrollable coughing spells. The illness can last for months.

Weeks Middle School, Lincoln High School and Lincoln South have all reported cases.

Health officials say the number of cases isn't especially high, but the concentration of cases and the highly contagious nature of whooping cough spurred the warning.
