La James International holding benefit for boy who battled cancer

La James International College in Cedar Falls is holding a benefit for Benny Bernard and his family on Friday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the college on University Ave in Cedar Falls. There will be burgers, brats, brownies and activities.  All of the money raised will go to Benny and his family.

Benny Barnard was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) on January 12, 2009, less than a week after his 4th birthday.  Benny received chemo treatments in total for three years two months and 4 days.  Treatments have included bone marrow aspirations to check and diagnose the leukemia, spinal taps (injecting chemo in the spinal column and checking to make sure there are no cancer cells in the spinal fluid), chemo injections, chemo IV infusions, daily oral chemo and other daily medications to keep him healthy.

Benny completed his chemotherapy treatments on March 18, 2012, but will still have to be checked to make sure he doesn't relapse regularly for the next five years and then annually for the rest of his life.
