Polk County parents warned about Whooping Cough

Polk County health officials are warning parents at three schools of cases of whooping cough. Letters were sent home to parents of students enrolled in Weeks Middle School, Lincoln High School and Lincoln South.

The county Health Department says at least 11 cases of pertussis have been confirmed. Pertusiss is commonly known as whooping cough.

Whooping cough is highly contagious and it spreads through the air when an infected person coughs. The cough can worsen over several weeks before developing into uncontrollable bouts of coughing. It can last for months.
