Blood donation in major demand

The American Red Cross will be hosting two blood drives Friday, one in Waterloo and one in Dubuque.

The American Red Cross says donated blood is being sent to hospitals as quickly as it comes in.

Blood and platelet distributions to hospitals have exceeded expectations and donations are fewer than anticipate and that is drawing down the red cross inventory.

The red cross is also trying to prepare in advance for severe weather season.

"Just an hour to volunteer your time and you can help save up to three lives. The need for blood right now, we need it desperately and I would encourage anyone to come in and donate," said Amy Yeska, American Red Cross.

If you are 16 years old you can donate blood with parental consent. You must also be over 110 pounds and in good health.

The American Red Cross needs all kinds of blood donations, but "O" negative is helpful as it is universal.
