WATERLOO (KWWL) -

Waterloo police say an SUV involved in a crash at West 4th Street and Clough Street in Waterloo Wednesday night was stolen.

Police tried to make a traffic stop on a white 2010 Hyundai Santa Fe at around 8:35 p.m. Wednesday but the driver tried to outrun police.

Officers say that after a short chase, the driver lost control of the SUV near the intersection of West 4th and Clough Streets.  The vehicle hit and tree and flipped, trapping the driver inside.

Travis Ray Wright, 18, of Waterloo, was freed from the vehicle and taken to Allen Hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries and released.

He was arrested and charged with eluding police and taken to the Black Hawk County Jail.

At 2:30 a.m. Thursday, police received a report that an Ottumwa man's white 2010 Hyundai Santa Fe had been stolen from the Westside parking ramp at 205 West 4th Street.  He had parked it there when he came to town on Wednesday.

Police say it was the same SUV that Wright crashed Wednesday night.  Wright has now been charged with first degree theft.
