A Cedar Rapids woman is accused of stealing prescription medications from Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.

Iowa City police say that Rose Marie Hayslett, 58, a nurse at the hospital, stole prescription drugs from September 30, 2009 until December 27, 2009.

According to criminal complaints, Hayslett would remove narcotics from a drug dispensing machine under various patients names and use them herself.

Police say Hayslett stole Hydromorphone and Morphine under the names of 15 different patients who were billed a total of $1,179.35 for the stolen medications.

Hayslett told police that she would abuse the medication when she could get away with it.  Fellow employees told police that Hayslett exhibited behavior consistent with being under the influence of a narcotic.

Hayslett is charged with second degree theft, tampering with records, dependent adult abuse and 15 counts of prohibited acts-prescription drugs.

Mercy Hospital would not say if Hayslett is still employed with the hospital or not.
