Horse owners are encouraged to get their animals vaccinated

MADISON, Wis. (KWWL) -

Veterinarians are reminding horse owners to get their animals vaccinated.

Two diseases in particular, Eastern equine encephalitis and West Nile virus have together stricken hundreds of horses in Wisconsin since 2001.

Veterinarian Robert Ehlenfeldt says Wisconsin had more cases of Eastern equine encephalitis last year than any other state.  And of the 36 cases, most or all were fatal.

While cases of West Nile virus are down in Wisconsin, Ehlenfeldt says that doesn't mean there won't be an upswing.

Last year there were only three cases of West Nile virus in horses in Wisconsin. But Ehlenfeldt doesn't want horse owners to become complacent and stop vaccinating.

Both diseases are caused by viruses carried by mosquitoes. Symptoms include loss of appetite, drooping eyelids and lower lip, and fever.
