Medical calls up in Iowa

Medical calls seem to be on the rise in many Iowa fire departments, in part because more and more aging baby boomers need emergency aid.

In Iowa City, the fire department says they responded to about 2,800 calls for emergency medical service last year. That is up nearly 400 from 2007.

In Cedar Rapids, the fire department says it responded to more than 5,400 EMS calls last year. Again, about 400 up from 2007.

Nationally, the calls for emergency service are up nearly 300 percent since 1980. That's according to the National Fire Protection Association.
