April Fools' 5k race - KWWL - Eastern Iowa Breaking News, Weather, Closings

Fools' 5K held in Waterloo

More than 1,000 people gathered at George Wyth State Park Saturday morning to run the annual Fools 5K.

Trekman Racing and the Black Hawk County Family and Children's Council teamed up to sponsor the race - which happens each year around April Fools' Day.

This year, they had a record number of runners - with nearly 1,100. When the race first started nine years ago, there were only 150 runners. Two years ago there were only 450.

It's a fun run - marked with a costume contest.

Prizes were handed out for the best overall costume, as well as prizes for the fastest male and female runners

Dave Lipinski, owner of Trekman Racing and the Fools' 5K organizer, said "Runners like cool weather, so that's not a problem at all. I'm just glad it's not raining, but I'm wondering where the sun went. We had 65 degrees every day and now it's 45, but it's ok.

A new course record was set by Sammy Rotich of West Des Moines.

His time of 15:14 beat the previous course record by 21 seconds.
