Hundreds gather to walk against cancer

Hundreds turned out for the relay for life race in Iowa City Friday night

The event kicked off at 7 P.M. Friday on the campus of the University of Iowa and goes until 7 A.M. Saturday.

Several cancer survivors were at the event. They say cancer doesn't end when you hear survivor, the event helps raise money for long term battles down the road.

"A lot of people think that cancer ends when you hear the word survivor or that survivorship means your never going to have to battle your cancer again," said Emily Inman, a cancer survivor participating in the Relay for Life event.

The event also builds relationships with those who don't have cancer.

"It's a way of building camaraderie as well as raising the funds for the fight against cancer," said organizer Dr. George Weiner.

Organizers hope to raise $50,000 through the overnight event.
