Applications for jobless benefits dropped last week

Weekly applications for jobless benefits dropped last week, signaling the job market may be improving.

According to the U.S. Labor Department applications for unemployment benefits fell 5,000 to a seasonally adjusted 359,000. It signals the smallest number of applicants since April 2008.

Nationally, from December through February, employers added an average of 245,000 jobs per month. Most analysts say when applications fall below 375, 000 it usually means hiring is picking up.
