Driver burned in semi fire

A semi driver suffered minor burns to his hands when his trailer caught on fire Wednesday afternoon.

Black Hawk County deputies say that a semi driven by Boyd Jeffries, 58, of Colfax, Washington, was northbound on I-380 when his trailer full of John Deere tractor parts caught fire.

According to deputies, a mechanical malfunction caused an axle to catch fire.

Jeffries pulled the semi to the side of the interstate near mile marker 57.  He was able to disconnect the trailer from the semi, but suffered minor burns to his hands.

The northbound lanes of 380 were shut down for about 20 minutes while fire crews from La Porte City and Brandon put out the fire.

Damage to the trailer is estimated at $2,000.  Damage to the tractor parts is estimated at $40,000.00.
