Columbus junior Bernt seeks success in two arenas

WATERLOO (KWWL) -

Spring time can be a bit hectic for Columbus junior Alex Bernt.  After school, Alex, one of the leader's of the Sailor tennis team, hits the court.  When he's done there, however, he doesn't go home.  Instead Alex Bernt laces up the cleats and heads straight to soccer practice.

"It's hard to focus on one or the other," says Alex, "but I just do the best at both of them I can."

"He leads by example," says Columbus tennis coach Casey Goerdt, "so when he's here he works hard.  All the other guys see that, so even when he leaves everyone's working hard."

Alex isn't the only Sailor to play both sports, but he's certainly had the most success.  That's especially true on the tennis court where he won the past 2 class 1A doubles titles with playing partner Michael Goerdt.

"The first year we had no idea what to expect," recalls Goerdt, "last year, winning it was just crazy to get 2 back to back.  It was awesome."

The most recent title came on a crazy day last May. Alex and Michael won their semi-final match, then immediately left and played in the second half of the soccer team's state qualifying win over Postville.  Soon after they returned to the court, finishing the day by picking up their second straight state title.

"That was a good day actually," says Bernt, "It was a pretty hectic day, but it was fun."

This year Alex is dealing with change after the graduation of his doubles partner.  Now he hopes to make a name for himself with a run at the singles title.

"I've never been at the state tournament, all that pressure on myself.  I've always had Goerdt with me to help me through it, so it will be interesting to see how it goes."
