WASHINGTON, D.C. (KWWL) -

The Independence and the Garwin Fire Departments are being awarded $163,037 in grants from the Department of Homeland Security to help purchase new life-saving equipment.

"Iowa's first responders- professional and volunteer- put their lives on the line to protect their neighbors," Rep. Bruce Braley (D-IA) said.  "These grants help ensure our local fire departments have the equipment they need to serve their communities and protect themselves."

The Independence Fire Department is receiving a $137,845 grant to update their inventory of Self-Contained Breathing Apparatuses. The Department's current stock of SCBAs are roughly 20 years old.

Additionally, the Garwin Volunteer Fire Department was awarded a grant totaling $25,192 for similar safety equipment upgrades. This funding supporting new equipment will improve safety for the firefighters, and help them to better serve the Independence and Garwin communities.
