State education funding gap down party lines

Posted:

Iowa House Republicans have pushed through a big proposed cut in education spending--approving a schools budget that is $36 million less than the current budget.

Republicans approved the measure Tuesday on a party-line vote, with 56 GOP members in favor and 40 Democrats opposed.

The spending plan would mean a $774 million budget for the Iowa Department of Education.

The matter is far from settled.

Democrats running the Senate have already approved a school spending plan that's $115 million larger than the House measure.
