Prom's Closet helps girls find inexpensive dresses

High school proms are not too far away and for many girls, finding the perfect dress can be difficult and expensive.

Some high school girls were able to get a break when it comes to dress shopping, thanks to Prom's Closet.

It's an effort that was started last year in the Waterloo-Cedar Falls area where girls can get gently used dresses for cheap.

Hundreds of dresses and accessories were donated by families, local businesses and dress shops to give girls an alternative to department store shopping.

Saturday afternoon, girls could shop for dresses at a special sale at Crossroads Center in Waterloo.

The Junior League put Prom's Closet together this year because they say it fits their mission of improving women's lives.

"It's designed to give girls an opportunity to get a great dress for a reasonable price. The cost of going to prom these days has really gone up tremendously since I was in school, and so this gives girls an opportunity to go in a beautiful dress and not break the budget," said Junior League President, Shasta Locke.

Each dress, regardless of size or style, was available for only $10, where a new dress can cost more than $100.
