Cedar Rapids holds state science olympiad tournament

Some of the brighter young minds in the state invaded Cedar Rapids for the Iowa Science Olympiad.

More than 300 middle school and high school students competed in 23 events in math, science, and engineering.

In one event, participants engineered a catapult that uses energy of a falling weight to launch a ball as accurately as possible.

The program is dedicated to improving the quality of K-12 science education.

"Even if they don't become a scientist, they learn skills that help them in different organizations no matter what they choose for a career," said Susan Noreuil, the director for Iowa's Science Olympiad.

The winning team will go to Orlando for the national competition in May.
