Cedar Rapids anglers enjoy annual trout derby

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

The fish were biting Saturday in Cedar Rapids, thanks to a little help from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.

The DNR brought in two thousand rainbow trout to the Prairie Park Fishery.

The fish were released as part of the annual Trout Fishing Derby.

More than 200 fishermen and women turned out to bait a hook and try and land at least one fish.

Organizers say they hope the event encourages families within urban areas to go out and enjoy nature.

"Our lives are getting busier and busier with all the activities and work in our lives that people don't make the time to do a full nature experience," said Rob Wagner with Cedar Rapids Parks and Recreation Department.

Two hundred of the fish were tagged to be redeemed for prizes.

Iowa lakes, like Prairie, Park Fishery are too warm to support year-round trout life-cycles.
