"Combat Hunger" this weekend at 13 area grocery stores
WATERLOO (KWWL) -
By simply making a trip to the grocery store this weekend, you can help provide food for people in need in eastern Iowa.
"For every dollar that's donated, we can provide almost $12 worth of food," said Barb Prather with the Northeast Iowa Food Bank.
The food bank's annual "Combat Hunger" event kicked off Friday afternoon. Thirteen area grocery stores in Cedar Falls, Waterloo, Waverly and Hudson are participating. All you have to do is add $1 or $3 to your grocery bill at check-out, or you can give a donation directly to volunteers on site.
"All the money comes back to us to help us provide food and groceries to people in need throughout our agencies in northeast Iowa," said Prather.
In more than 15 years, the most money Combat Hunger has raised during a weekend was $14,000. Hopefully, that record is broken this year.
"I just want to thank the sponsors and the community because without them we can't do what we do," said Barb Prather.
The Northeast Iowa Food Bank works with approximately 200 member agencies to distribute food throughout 16 counties. So this weekend, shop for yourself but think of someone else.
