CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) -

Ten special people were honored as "Heroes Among Us" Thursday morning in Cedar Falls.

One of them, Readlyn Police Chief Steve Aiello rescued a man from a burning apartment last December.

Two others, Hawkeye Community College students Jennifer Gidewell and Tony Reinking risked their lives to pull a woman and her oxygen tank from a burning car last November.

And Craig White of Waterloo was recognized for organizing the Honor Flights that take local veterans of World War II to Washington to see the memorials built in their honor.

Others honored Thursday: Harry and Betty DeGroote for their ministry work at the Black Hawk County Jail; Connor Klein of Cedar Falls for saving the life of a drowning man at Daytona Beach last summer;  Raldo Schneider for organizing the Cedar River Festival; and Benjamin Bantz of Cedar Falls and his kindergarten teacher, Kim Vandendriessche, for saving the life of Ben's dad, after he fell into a diabetic coma.

The awards are sponsored each year by the Covenant and Sartori Health Care Foundations.

KWWL's Ron Steele and Jim Coloff emceed the event, attended by dozens of community leaders from across the Cedar Valley.
