UPDATE: Gibson won't take Southern Illinois University job

Gloria Gibson, UNI's Executive Vice President and Provost, won't end up taking a position at Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville.

Gibson was a finalist for the Chancellor's job, according to their website.

Gibson, who has been at UNI since July 1, 2009, has been in the spotlight in recent months as the university deals with a severe budget crisis.  Gibson, along with President Ben Allen, have recommended cutting more than 50 academic programs and closing the Malcolm Price Laboratory School to close the budget gap.  The Iowa State Board of Regents approved those cuts at a meeting on Wednesday.

Gibson earned a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degree in music education from Southern Illinois University.

University of Northern Iowa Provost Gloria Gibson has withdrawn her candidacy.

She told the college paper that when her mother died recently, moving closer to home became less pressing.

She also told the newspaper that "there is much work to be accomplished here at UNI."

Raymond W. Alden III, Ph.D. from Northern Illinois University, Julie A. Furst-Bowe, Ed.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Stout and Carl Anthony Stockton, Ph.D. from University of Houston-Clear Lake are the other three finalists for the position.
