University funding a work in progress in Iowa

Leaders of the Iowa Board of Regents are relying on supporters of the state's three public universities to convince lawmakers to reverse budget cuts and increase funding.

During a meeting in Iowa City on Wednesday, Board President Craig Lang said alumni, donors and other university supports should speak up now if they want to see a change in lawmakers making cuts to higher education funding.

The state senate has approved a bill to increase funding for universities by $34 million for 2013. The Iowa house has approved a $31 million budget cut.

Governor Terry Branstad is pushing for a $20 million increase.
