CR Fire Dept: vacant home fire could be arson

Cedar Rapids Fire Crews battled an overnight home fire that they said was probably caused by arson.

The fire was at a flooded home at 421 Sixth Avenue Southwest in Cedar Rapids. Crews were called around 10:52 p.m. Tuesday.

When they arrived, they said fire was shooting from every window and door. Neighbors said the house had been vacant since it was flooded in 2008. They also said the roof had collapsed, the house was completely gutted and no utilities remained.

Greg Buelow with the Cedar Rapids Fire Department said all that remains of the home is rubble and foundation.

Buelow said he doesn't know exactly what caused the fire, but since there were no utilities, arson is probable. This is the 29th known fire in the flood zone.
