UPDATE: Man identified in Mississippi River drowning

PRAIRIE DU CHIEN, Wis. (KWWL) -

A man died after jumping into the Mississippi River in Prairie du Chien, Wis. on Sunday to rescue his dog.

Tuesday morning, the Prairie du Chien Police Department identified the man as 25-year-old Joseph Sprosty of Stueben, Wis.

The Crawford County Sheriff's Office said the incident happened Sunday around 3 p.m., near the Fischer Street Boat Landing on St. Feriole Island. They say Sprosty began struggling in the water and dropped below the water line when witnesses lost sight of him.

Rescue crews from Prairie du Chien; Crawford County, Wis.; Grant County, Wis.; the Wisconsin and Iowa Departments of Natural Resources and Clayton County, Iowa helped in the search.

Crews recovered Sprosty's body around 7:30 p.m. Sunday.

The Prairie du Chien Police Department said firefighters rescued the dog.
