Cedar Rapids garage fire injures one man

A 45-year-old man is recovering from his injuries this morning after a garage fire in Cedar Rapids

Fire crews were called to 1221 Sierra Drive NE at 12:12 a.m. Friday.  When they arrived they encountered a two stall garage up in flames.  The garage was located near the Forest Ridge Apartments.

Cedar Rapids Police Officer Chris Carton was first on the scene and saw the 45-year-old man lying near the garage, semi-conscious. He moved him away from the burning garage just as tires on the two vehicles in the garage started to explode.

The fire did not spread to the apartments or any buildings nearby, but it did damage cars in a nearby garage.  The vehicles and the garage where the fire started are a total loss. A 1999 Ford Crown Victoria which belong to the injured man was among the destroyed cars. Cedar Rapids resident Mark Reilly's 1963 Pontiac was the other car destroyed.

The injured man's name and current condition have not been released. Fire crews also have not figured out what caused the fire.
