Warm weather impacts sap at nature centers

Warm weather is impacting maple syrup collection at area nature centers.

Hartman Reserve Nature Center in Cedar Falls says they are cancelling the rest of this season's public maple sap collection events. Officials say the sap begins to sour in warm weather and makes a bitter tasting syrup.

At Indian Creek Nature Center in Cedar Rapids, officials say they will simply modify their Maple Syrup Time program. Participants will still go out and tap a tree as part of the educational program, but that sap won't be used in the syrup making process. On-hand supplies are good, and they have plenty of sap to boil down to turn into syrup.
