Iowa Supreme Court to review Becker case

The Iowa Supreme Court will review Mark Becker's case on March 29 when they travel to Drake University.

The Iowa Supreme Court travels to Drake University every year as part of an event that helps law students understand the appeals process.

The Iowa Appeals Court upheld Becker's first-degree murder conviction last September, but Becker appealed to the Iowa Supreme Court, which agreed to hear the case.

Becker contends that the district court submitted a flawed jury instruction defining the elements of his insanity defense. He said he thinks the jury erred in overruling his requested instruction informing the jury of the consequences of a not guilty by reason of insanity verdict and ordering him to pay for his legal assistance that exceeded fee limitations.

Becker was convicted of murdering Aplington-Parkersburg head football coach Ed Thomas in June 2009.  He argues that he was legally insane at the time of the murder.
