Dunkerton meeting ends in heated discussion

There were tense moments at Dunkerton's school board meeting Tuesday night.

The Dunkerton school board took suggestions from the community on how to move forward from a controversial assembly last week.

Last week, the group "You Can Run, But You Can't Hide" talked to students about issues involving abstinence, abortion, homosexuality and the constitution.

Tuesday night people on both sides of the issue voiced their opinions.

Moving forward, the board says it will create a committee of students, teachers, parents and administrators when selecting and inviting guest speakers to come to Dunkerton schools.

Superintendent Jim Stanton says the school has been contacted by the organization "Safe Schools Iowa" about holding an assembly at Dunkerton. The organization fights bullying in Iowa schools.

"Since they made contact with us Monday, I've spent the last two days checking them out. I've checked them out once, twice, three times before I was going to invite them to come to our school," Stanton said.

The meeting was adjourned early due to the heated discussions. Board member Kirby Marquart was asked to leave the meeting Tuesday night after heated exchanges with other school administrators and parents.
